The disruption of traffic by the protests has had an undeniable impact on air quality alongside streets. Without a government policy shift, after the demonstrations have ended, we will have to rely on our memories of the protest days for what clean vehicles on our roads mean for air quality.

This project traps air pollution and particulate matter into meringues, which are then served to politicians or business owners for a blind taste test of the air quality in their area.

Clever.

Tung’s old speech both astonished and angered me. Our government recognised the threat over a decade ago. Yet it wasted that decade. Tung at least told the truth about our filthy air - it is seriously affecting the public’s health. Neither Tung’s successor, Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, nor the environment secretary, Edward Yau Tang-wah, has linked air pollution with public health.

fromtheretohere:

Roadside air pollution reached 495 yesterday. Doctors advised people to avoid heavily polluted areas and strenuous exercise. A reading of 0-50 is acceptable under Hong Kong guidelines. When it hits 101-200, people with heart and respiratory illnesses are in trouble. Over 200, healthy people start to suffer eye irritation, coughing, phlegm and sore throats, and suffer severe internal injury. (Photographs by Paul Hilton.
